The 2012 Winter seaso will begin the week commencing Tuesday 3rd April. It is expected that the stadium will have 6 courts open which will allow the Association to once again schedule games in a more suitable format.

New Year, New Direction, New Staff

Penrith Basketball is pleased to announce the appointment of Basketball Participation and Growth employee from Step Up Basketball, Jarrod Moore. Jarrod will focus on school visits, increasing members and L2P clinics and camps in 2012.

Curtis Sardi will be enrolling into University, Term 2 and has been endorsed by the Association for private coaching for individuals, groups and teams as well a specialised clinics during holidays or early morning.

Curtis will advertise what services he will be able to provide in the near future and will continue to be one of our Representative Coaches at Penrith. We wish him all the very best.

Jarrod has great experience in working with young children in schools and is a very energetic, talented coach with a degree in Sports Coaching. He will be visiting many schools and promoting our sport as well as converting these visits into new members and school based clubs. He has been with Step Up in the northern suburbs prior to this and is excited about the challenge ahead. Jarrod and Step Up will be advertising new ideas in the near future

Learn 2 Play Information and Dates

The Term 1 Learn 2 Play program is now underway. This program is designed for beginner basketballers from K-6 and is a fun, skills based program for boys and girls. You may join at any time and pay in advance for a discount or weekely if preferred. Days, dates and times are attached for your information.

Registration Fee Increase

BNSW has increased Registration Fees in the categories of Senior $4.00, Junior $4.00 and Miniball $3.00. Unfortunately the Association will have to increase our fees by this margin as of 1st February.

New registration fees are Senior $119.00, Veteran $89.00, Junior, $89.00, Miniball $68.00, Secondary registrations $8.00 per month or $10.00 for two months.

Ben Kearins called up for NSW

Ben Kearins has been called in to play for the NSW U20 Men for the Australian Championships in Canberra. This will be the third time Ben will represent NSW and as a bottom age athlete is a great credit to his hard work, dedication and never say die attitude. All of Penrith wish him well.

P&DBA Annual General Meeting

State Honours for Panthers

Emily Potts and Rhiannon Pope have both been selected in the NSW U18 Womens side to play at the Australian Junior Championships in Perth WA from the 14th to the 20th April 2012.

The selection for Emily is her second, after representing NSW in 2011 in the U16 Women but for Rhiannon, it is her first NSW selection and we could not be more excited and proud for her. We all wish both girls the very best of luck at the Championships

The Association would also like to acknowledge Curtis Sardi as an Assistant Coach with the NSW U18 Men. We are sure that Curtis will do an outstanding job in this program and wish him every success.

Wanted – WCL Team Manager

Penrith Basketball is looking for a keen volunteer to assist with the WCL men’s program in the position of Team Manager.

Sadly the current team manager Bradley Clark, has had to resign his position due to relocating for a work opportunity interstate. We wish him all the best in the future.

Chol and Gak included in NSWIS

Madol Chol and Amat Gak, two members of our talented U18Mens team this year have been awarded scholarships with the NSWIS(NSW Institute of Sport) Basketball program under coach Damian Cotter. The Association is hoping to see these boys line up in our senior program in 2012 and coach Damian Cotter fully supports talented athletes staying at their local association and progressing through from juniors to seniors.

Both boys have been given this opportunity after working with Damian in a new program designed to support and assist young Sudanese basketballers..

2012 Representative Coaches appointed

The Association is pleased to announce the coaches for the 2012 representative season. The Executive is looking forward to the challenges of another season and is confident the appointed coaches will have another successful year in 2012.

The Association has also confirmed nominations will be made to the Waratah Men Championship Division and Youth Men and Women. The nomination of both Youth Men and Women in conjunction with two teams in both the U18Men and U18 Women are seen as vital steps for the future and progression of our senior representative program. Further discussions will take place regarding players who do not fall into the Championship or Youth categories and options available for these players.

Penrith win two State Championships

Congratulations to coach Vince Zalac and the U12Men and coach Rod Miskell and the U12 Women for their fantastic NSW State Championship wins on the weekend giving them the prestigous double of Sydney and State Champions.

It is very rare for an Association to win both the Men and Womens title and we are all very excited and proud of this wonderful achievement. Both teams are wonderful ambassadors for our district and Association. We hope to see many of these players represent their State in the coming years. Jasper Rentoy 12M, Binta Salawu 12W and Tahlia Tupaea 16W were all named MVP of their Grand Finals.

The U16 Women were also very succesful only losing their GF in the dying seconds by one basket, but were still very pleased with the atitle of State Championship Runner Up. The U18 Men were unlucky not to make the final after finishing equal with 2 other teams and missing out on a countback.

Tahlia Tupaea selected to National All School team

Congratulations to Tahlia Tupaea for her recent selection in the Australian All Schools team to tour Texas and Arizona in November/December of this year.

Tahlia was selected from the NSW Combined High School team and their Gold Medal performance at the National All Schools basketball tournament in Camberra in August and is one of the youngest ever to make this team. There will be a fundraising trivia night organised to assist Tahlia and her family with expenses and we hope many of you can enjoy this evening and help her along the way. More details shortly.

Junior Summer Season

The summer junior basketball season for Penrith begins on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October. Any new members may sign up on Saturday 10th September 10.30am to 2.00pm or contact the Association via email at penrithbasketball@people.net.au or phone 4731-3252.

We cater for boys and girls from U8Mixed to U19′s, Those players too old for U19′s should enter the senior competitions which begin 26th September. Nominations available online now.

Panthers State League Champions

The Colonial Hotel Panthers have regained the Div 1 State League crown with a great team effort over the weekend, beating Bankstown convincinly on Saturday in the major semi and then overpowering Hornsby in the final quarter yesterday in the Grand Final

All players contributed well to the result and our congratulations go to the coaching staff and all players for a great year. Emlyn Dodd was presented with the 2011 Rookie of the Year Award for State League Men and Matt Slack was voted Best Defensive Player for the Grand Final game, which topped off a great weekend.
